action

what are we called to do? what does discipleship look like?  what is Christ summoning us into?  can we just sit and read and talk or does it require action?

if all we do is discuss and question (which is great and healthy) but never move into action, are we the modern day ‘pharisee’? are we as a people becoming more and more complacent about which pastor is best, or who has  better sound system, or which church has the most singles to marry/date?  the better question is; is it really about all that?

Christ simply says; “therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”  -Matt. 28.19-20

He then states in Acts 1.7-8 just right before he ascends to heaven, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In these two famous statements Jesus makes; if you notice there is no question or implication of what to do.  It is simply put as GO, into your city (Jerusalem) to your country (Judea/Samaria) and to the world (ends of the earth).  We are summoned and called to go.  This doesn’t mean everyone is called to go to the world, If you notice Jesus starts off by saying go to your home town, your family, co-workers, classmates, friends, etc.  That in and of itself is our call.  But do we even go that far?  Do we proclaim the Kingdom of God to our co-workers?  Do we love our father who abandoned us?  Do we proclaim freedom to the captive?  The best part about this is, we are not alone.  Jesus states, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age”.  He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us.  The Spirit resides in us.  Through the power of the Spirit we are able to do the things of Christ, to go and proclaim this good news.

If we only discuss and theorize about what this world would like if we only…

In this song Tim Hughes writes I believe he does a great job in encapsulating our call,

“God of Justice, Saviour to all
Came to rescue the weak and the poor
Chose to serve and not be served

Jesus, You have called us
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give

We must go live to feed the hungry
Stand beside the broken
We must go
Stepping forward keep us from just singing
Move us into action
We must go

To act justly everyday
Loving mercy in every way
Walking humbly before You God

You have shown us, what You require
Freely we’ve received
Now freely we will give
Fill us up and send us out Lord”

“You are my portion, O Lord; I have promised to obey your words.

I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.

I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.

I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.”

-Psalm 119; Heth
